Wealthwoke Weekly Whammy #8 – 19 April 2019

This turned out to be a week that was focused mainly on finding ways to cut out unnecessary monthly expenses. I started out by going through my bank statements with a fine tooth comb – and managed to chop out nearly R2000 per month in wasteful spending. Watch the video of me explaining how I did this – and how you can too.

While I was at it, I came across a tweet from the CEO of a large insurance company about how she had saved R10 000 per month by swopping her fancy Merc for a Fiat 500. I managed to video interview her about this decision and the impact it has had on her life.

I’m really pleased that all Wealthwoke podcasts are now available on Spotify. Just download the Spotify app and search for Wealthwoke.

American Kingpin: Catching the Billion-Dollar Baron of the Dark Web
By Nick Bilton

There are two types of people in this world that I find particularly fascinating – drug trafficking narcos and eccentric tech entrepreneurs.

So I was particularly interested in the story of Ross Ulbricht, aka “The Dread Pirate Robert”, aka “The Billion Dollar Baron of the Dark Web”.

This is the true life tale of the twenty-six-year-old boy-next-door programmer and libertarian thinker who launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine Web site hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything – drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons – all using crypto currencies.

The Silk Road quickly ballooned into a $1.2 billion enterprise and in the process became a prime target of the FBI, DEA and other US law enforcement agencies.

Besides being an interesting real-life look at how cryptocurrencies can be used for nefarious purposes, I really enjoyed the evolution of the main character from college graduate to underworld kingpin.

Have a great weekend Wealthwokers.

After growing up in a small dustbowl town, I obtained an honours degree in finance and investment, worked as an asset consultant, financial journalist and corporate communications consultant, started and sold one of the country’s largest PR agencies, got married and divorced, and married again, had two beautiful daughters and fought valiantly (if not always successfully) to dominate the tennis world. Despite these efforts, my greatest journey is still before me – the journey to becoming truly Wealthwoke.
